Suggestions for interns:
Toiletries: toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo/conditioner, tampons/menstural cups (hard to come by here), condoms etc. - can be bought here to save space, but more expensive
consider shampoo/conditioner bars and soap bars(better for the environment & takes up less space)
Vaseline/aquaphor and baby powder come in handy when dealing with heat rashes
Comfortable shorts, tank tops, casual, flowy dresses - any casual clothes that are lightweight and comfortable in hot weather - bring a nice outfit or 2 for going out, but you’re mostly going to be wearing the same t-shirt/tank and shorts over and over. You won’t need as many clothes as you think
3 bathing suits - if you’re going to surf definitely bring one that’s secure in the ocean
Flip flops, a pair of close toed shoes for hiking, strap on sandals like Teva’s or Chacos come in handy
MISC: water bottle, laundry bag, rain jacket, day pack, sunglasses, hat, speaker, kindle, flat soccer/volleyball, extra phone charger, reusable bags, cosmetic carrier/bag, coffee mug/tumbler, extra phone if you have one to spare (they get stolen or broken frequently), suction cup hangers for shower
Things to leave at home : hair dryer, heels, jeans, thick sweatshirts/pants
Spending Money
Get a small amount colones or US $ from your bank ahead of coming here
-many places accept credit cards and US dollars. You can use the ATMs in jaco to take out money. Remember to contact your bank prior to travels so they are aware you will be using your card in a different location.
Your budget will depend greatly on whether or not you prefer to cook or eat out. You can get produce from the farmers market for relatively cheap prices and cook meals in the common kitchen to save a lot of money on food. It will also depend on how much you party, beer is about $8 a 6 pack - really similar to American prices. You get 50% off lunch and dinner at the hostel which makes eating there a great deal (a typical meal costs you between $4 and $5 USD with the discount). During slow season the hostel can close the kitchen though
Weekly budget : about $75-125 USD
Places to Eat
TacoBar- $3 breakfast every morning before 11AM if you get sick of your free hostel breakfast or want a $3 meal to-go for later.
Marea Alta- Closest restaurant to the hostel and has the best local food around, for the best price. Open 24hrs
Rustico - local soda, you can get a huge plate of food for about $6
Tsunami- Wednesday and Friday is 1?2 off sushi, still fairly expensive.
Arigato Sushi- Thursday is 2x1 hand roll night, $1.50 per hand roll. Great deal.
Green Room- Monday night is $4 craft beer night and they have some of the best
food and cocktails in town. Still not very “cheap” - hosts live music every night
Wednesday: Jaco Blu, Thursday: Wishbone, Friday/Saturday: Swell mostly, sometimes Green Room for live music, Orange Pub
Sushi at home: they have the best deals on sushi in town, sundays and most of the week.
Las orquideas: have some awesome deals on pasta, and is a nice little restaurant, they only sale pasta and italian food.
Jaco Walk is a new modern shopping center with lots of restaurants and shops
Rioasis and the pizza shop
Best ways to travel?
The public buses in Costa Rica are the cheapest way to travel to Jaco. It costs about $5 or 2500 colones to get from San Jose to Jaco. You go to the new 7-10 bus station, any taxi driver will know how to get there. You can also use Uber, which is cheaper than a taxi and perfect if you don’t have cash yet when you get out of the airport. You buy your ticket to Jaco on the second floor of the bus station and the bus leaves about every hour until 6pm.
If you’re not comfortable taking the public bus you can take a taxi for $95, Uber for about $65, or book a private shuttle with the hostel (R2B’s driver will pick you up at the airport and take you to the hostel) .
Do not rent a car. Trust us on this! Driving here is very different then driving anywhere else you will have ever driven. Most roads are only one lane and trucks love to pass you making it incredibly scary. The bus system is the best and safest way to travel. If you do get a 4 wheel drive and insurance!
MISC
Keeping a good workout routine going can be challenging, but there is a gym down the street where you can get a day pass for $6 or $16 monthly. The hike up to El Mirador - a lookout point over Jaco - is also a really good workout. If you have access to a phone/laptop/iPad you can look up exercise videos online on the rooftop, yoga mats are available.
The hike from Jaco to Hermosa is a pleasant 3 hour hike and you can finish with a beer at Vista Hermosa
Go to the Thursday/Friday Farmers Market! It’s right around the corner and you can find the freshest fruits. It’s open Thursday nights for the locals and you get a much better selection the earlier you go.
If hair maintenance is a concern, there are salons in town to get a hair-cut or even hair removal such as waxing. Acqua salon and Studio M Salon are two reliable options.
Practice your Spanish! You don’t need to know Spanish to get around Jaco, but having some conversational skills makes it a little easier and it is more fun to interact with the locals if you can speak some Spanish. They will help you with your Spanish and you can help with their English. Duolingo is a great free app to help you learn and practice.
Make friends with your fellow volunteers, but also with the guests and locals. You will meet some really great people if you go out and strike up a conversation.
Surf as much as you can! It’ll be hard if you’ve never done it before but at the end looking at how much you’ve learned is really cool. It’s much easier to learn here with access to the beach across the street and having free use of different surfboard sizes
Come here with an open mind and ready to meet people from all walks of life and be ready to have a great time. Everyone is going through something, have patience and be accepting of all shapes, colors, and sizes, and be respectful to everyone and everything.
Say yes to as many
things as you can!
To ensure your own safety please keep in mind the following
The sun is very strong due to our geographic location being so
close to the equator, to protect yourself make sure to use sunblock while spending extended time in the sun, even if there is an overcast of clouds.
Do not surf alone, drowning is a real possibility and should be avoided by going with a friends, this way everybody can have somebody to look after them.
Coconuts are very common especially on the beach, please be aware that coconuts can become too heavy to stay on the tree and will fall. If you are using a palm tree for protection from the sun make sure you are not directly under this potential hazard.
Litter - Walking around the beach side town barefoot may be appealing but the ground is often littered with broken glass and emptied beer cans. Be aware that injuries to one's feet can be avoided by simply wearing flip flops.
People - not all people are bad but, unfortunately, not all people good. It is in your best interest to keep your wits about you, do not get too intoxicated, do not wander alone at night, do not leave your drinks unattended, and avoid strangers who seem overly interested in where you are staying and where you are going. Pick pockets, robberies, and violent scenes, although not a regular happening, have happened in the past.
Here in Costa Rica there are a few animals that one should caution.
From Jesko:
Make sure you have a working Credit Card for Costa Rica, there are banks you need to contact in advance before coming, especially if you are from Europe, or they may block your card.
If you are not used to AC's at all, it's very likely you will get a little cold, at least thats what happened to me and a few of the other volunteers. A little bag with travel pharmacy is my little recommendation anyways, but you can also buy it here if needed.
If you practiced with Duolingo before you came, that's good! Just try and speak with locals, its alot of fun. But i also have to admit that people speak way faster and that can be intimidating at first. If you are not comfortable with spanish when you arrive, here are 2 Options to get into speaking more easy:
The app dict.cc, where you can download vocabulary for English-Spanish or other languages. It’s useful when you're on the road and can't think of a word.
Use https://www.deepl.com/translator when you have internet, the sentences actually translate the meaning. Google Translator is not good for Spanish and may change the meaning, which can lead to confusion on both parts.
Remember you are only working 24 hours/week. The rest of the time is yours. It’s still great to hang around the hostel on your time off, but also have fun exploring Jaco and Costa Rica. While you are working be on time, don’t come in hungover, follow the rules and be extra friendly. You will find that the better a worker you are the better your time will be at our hostel.
We totally understand that it is a volunteer job for you and we want you to have a great time, but please understand that this is a business for us and your work here has a big impact on the quality of time our guests have and thus on our business.
